The Playford Band
“The Playford Band” a/k/a “Dance music for classical musicians”
An informal “reading” band situation for those who are interested in honing their skills in playing folk- and classical-style dance music. Meets Tuesdays 6-7pm, M259 in the TTU School of Music, beginning Tuesday August 30
Free instruction: An hour-long reading & coaching session for all those interested in dancing and playing dance music: campus & community, amateur & professional.
The core repertoires will be the “Country Dance” tunes first popularized in the “Playford books” of tunes & dances published in 17th century England, which still form the cornerstone of English Country Dance—and which feature prominently in the novels of Jane Austen and the Brontës and in the BBC productions of Pride and Prejudice and Thomas Hardy.
The “Playford Band” is offered FREE as a public service to the South Plains Community, but also partners with the Caprock English Country Dancers (http://englishcountrydancers.com) and in the annual VMC fund-raiser “Dancing with Mr Darcy”.
A co-sponsored production of the TTU Vernacular Music Center (http://ttuvmc.org), the Roots Music Institute (http://rootsmusicinstitute.com), the TTU Early Music Ensemble (http://ttuearlymusic.org) and the Caprock Early Music Association (http://cmea.org).
Begins Tuesday Aug 31 2011
All are welcome! Please pass the word!
