History
The origins of the CECD are in the experiences of TTU students participating in English Country Dance (ECD) at gatherings across the American Southwest, and in the VMC's annual Spring fundraising event, "Dancing with Mr Darcy: A Jane Austen Evening with the Vernacular Music Center." In such gatherings, students learned both the classic dances contained in the 17th century dance manuals published by John Playford & Sons (who give their name to the CECD's accompanying musicians, the Playford Band), as well as new dances created in the past 100 years by choreographers active in the ECD revival. At events like "Sets for Spring" (Dallas & Oklahoma City), the young dancers of the CECD met other dancers, choreographers, organizers, and legendary teachers, and forged relationships that continue to enrich what we do.
The CECD organizes recreational, avocational social dancing for participants of all ages and skill levels, and welcomes new dancers to the group and new musicians to the Playford Band.
